Summary

The characters in this story are all on a hunting trip for moose, somewhere up in Canada. It tells how another man washes up on the shore of Skeleton Lake right near the narrator's camp. The narrator says that the man, named Rushton, simply began to ramble about his recent experience, and could not be stopped from telling it. Rushton had said that a companion and his canoe had overturned and left the two men clinging to it, when they drifted near an island. Jake, Rushton's friend, had wanted to swim to the shore, and disappeared below the water instantly having let go of the canoe. Rushton said he'd gotten to the island and had seen shadows crawling out of the water and into the bushes. The narrator said that Rushton had so many flaws in his story that the truth was almost obvious. At the end of the story, two of the men went to go looking for the body, and found it with a terrible wound in the back of its head. One that he couldn't have done to himself.
